If USCIS received your N-400 before October 20, 2025, you take the old 100-question civics test — and most study material online has switched to the new 128

Which civics test you take is decided by the date USCIS received your N-400, not by your interview date: Received before October 20, 2025 → the 2008 test : 100 questions (USCIS M-638), the officer asks up to 10 out loud, 6 correct to pass. Received on or after that date → the 2025 test : 128 questions (M-1778), up to 20 asked, 12 correct to pass.
