Can my GPA be compensated?

I’m a sophomore in EE at a top 10 school. I’m pretty sure I will apply for PhD programs and preferably stay at the same school I’m attending. I have solid research experience (since 2nd sem of freshman year) as well as projects strongly related to the school focus now, and am pretty sure my PI is willing to fund my degree. However, my GPA is ~3.4 now because of an F I earned back in the day for an intro engineering class. I’m confident I can graduate with ~3.5ish GPA.
