Seeking advice for CEE PhD applications in the US as an International student

Hi everyone, I’m currently an undergraduate in Singapore studying civil engineering in my last year of my degree. My end goal is to work in academia, so I think applying to US direct PhD programs will be advantageous. However, I also have the option to do my PhD locally at the same university (top 10 QS ranking for civil), but the caveat is that it would be extremely unlikely for me to attain a TT position in any local institutions in the future (academic inbreeding). I have a 4.4/5 Gpa (hopefully 4.5/5 by the time i graduate) or about a 3.5/4 if I convert it directly to the 4.0 scale. Currently, I’m in the midst of researching for my undergrad thesis, which will be complete by the time I graduate next July. I also have some undergrad research experience, but it’s in a totally different field (preschool pedagogy) which i did for a year while doing my semester internship just to see if i liked doing research (I did). My concern is that when I’m applying for this round of applications, I don’t technically have even a year of experience of research in something relevant to civil engineering. I would like to seek advice on my current options, and if I should attempt to apply for Fall 2…
