How much rent can I actually afford if I take home around $4,200 a month?

I live in New Jersey, where rent isn't cheap. My gross is $70,000, but between taxes, a 5% 401k contribution, and health insurance, my take-home lands closer to $50,000. For context, I have a $370/mo car payment, I'm not in school, and I don't have kids, so I'm trying to figure out the max I can realistically put toward rent. I'm torn between a $2,100 place I really liked after touring a bunch of options, or dropping in-unit washer/dryer or central AC for something cheaper in a rougher neighborhood. Curious what others in a similar situation are paying. submitted by /u/reconcilepast to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]
