Credit score tanked over a $20 fee

Hi everyone, I had a CareCredit account with a balance that I paid off in full over the phone. After making the payment, I assumed the account was completely settled. Months later, I realized there was still a small balance (around $20) left on the account. From what I can tell, it was some kind of fee, although I honestly don't remember what it was for. During that time, CareCredit continued sending me mail, but I assumed it was just promotional material since I believed the account had been paid off. Because I didn't realize there was still a balance, it eventually became delinquent and was reported to the credit bureaus. As a result, my credit score dropped significantly. I've been trying to get this resolved for a while now. Every time I call CareCredit, they tell me they're "filing a dispute" for me, whatever that means. When I contact the credit bureaus, they tell me they can't change anything unless CareCredit updates or removes the information. It seems crazy that a $20 balance can have such a large impact on my credit. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! submitted by /u/Medical-Stress-770 to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]
