Found a $26k Social Security overpayment from when I was a minor

I’m 19 years old and finally trying to get my life in order, so I started by setting up my Social Security account. After a lot of calls, verification, and hassle, I got access online and found an outstanding debt of about $26,000. I know this happened because I was underage, autistic, and had no control over what was being done with my benefits. My mom was using my benefits for rent and other expenses, and she passed away last August, so I can’t even ask her about it now. On top of that, it looks like she was filing me under someone else’s taxes to get benefits while I was a minor, even though I had nothing to do with any of it. I had no control over any of this, and I’m trying to figure out how to handle it now. submitted by /u/Illustrious-Tie3515 to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]
